The People

The Reading to Learn program is run and supported by a growing international network of educators, from Australia to Sweden and Japan to South Africa.

Dr David Rose, R2L Director

As well as directing Reading to Learn, David is an Honorary Associate of the University of Sydney (http://sydney.edu.au/arts/linguistics/staff/drose.shtml). He has worked in literacy education for three decades, in schools, universities and communities. His work has  been particularly concerned with Indigenous communities in Australia, and with education for social justice. He lives in Sydney, but spends most of his time working with teachers around Australia and across the world.

Lyndall Harrison, R2L Coodinator in western NSW

Lyndall

Lyndall has extensive experience as a classroom teacher and as a literacy consultant with schools in western NSW. She is an expert in supporting teachers to integrate literacy teaching with their classroom programs. She has worked with Reading to Learn since 2005,when she initiated the first R2L program in western NSW, which has since grown into the preferred methodology across the region.

Claire Acevedo, R2L Coordinator in EuropeClaireAcevedo

Claire is a highly experienced language teacher and teacher educator. As coordinator of the Middle Years professional learning program with the Catholic Education Office Melbourne, she initiated an R2L teacher training program in 2004. She is now based in London and has been working with the Multilingual Research Institute in Stockholm to train Swedish teachers in the methodology.

Mike Hart, R2L Coordinator in South Africa

MikeMike worked for many years as a literacy teacher and teacher educator with the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, and also played a significant role in the struggle for social justice in South Africa. He met with David in 2006 and organised a trip to South Africa the following year, sparking interest in the methodology. He now coordinates a growing R2L teacher training program in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal, with the support of the Department of Education.

Cheryll Koop, Literacy Programs Facilitator, Western NSW Region

Cheryll

As Coordinator of the Reading to Learn in Murdi Paaki program in north western NSW, from 2006-9, Cheryll oversaw gains in the literacy outcomes of Indigenous children at 30% above the state average. In 2009 Cheryll  organised a major Reading to Learn conference in Dubbo, NSW. She is currently Faciltator of National Partnerships literacy programs in the western NSW region and is playing a key role in training teachers across the region in R2L.

Dr Sarah Culican, Literacy Education Officer, Catholic Education Office Melbourne

Sarah

Sarah is a highly experienced literacy teacher and teacher educator. She has worked with R2L in the Catholic Education Office Melbourne since 2004, and now coordinates R2L programs for the CEOM. She also initiated R2L programs with the Victorian state education department from 2007-9. She completed her PhD on R2L methodology in 2009 with Deakin University, where she has also worked as a lecturer. 

Frances Tolhurst, Professional Development Unit Coordinator, Aga Khan Foundation

FranFran is an extraordinary teacher educator who worked for many years with Indigenous schools and ESL learners in the Northern Territory. From 2007-9 she established a highly successful R2L training program for teachers in Afghanistan with the Aga Khan Foundation. She then initiated a program in east Africa, training Year 1-3 teachers, which has now become a large scale program in Kenya and Uganda.

Brendan Franzone, Literacy Consultant, Association of Independent Schools of WA

Brendan

As a literacy teacher and teacher educator, Brendan has been involved in R2L since 2002, when he and Kate Mullin introduced it to Wongutha College, a secondary boarding school for Inidigenous students in Esperance, WA. Since then he has worked with independent schools across southern WA, training teachers in R2L.

Ann-Christin Lövstedt and Eija Kuyumcu, Multilingual Research Institute, Stockholm

AnnChristinEijaAnn-Christin and Eija (shown here with David during the 2010 Stockholm conference) are teacher educators of long-standing in Sweden. Together with Claire Acevedo they have initiated an R2L teacher traiining program, following a 2008 conference organised by Ann-Christin, that introduced the pedagogy to Sweden. They have also commenced negotiations for a pan-European R2L project sponsored by the European Union, and a research project with the R2L maths strategies.

Ingrid Westhoff, R2L Coordinator, Viña, ChileIngrid

Ingrid is a language educator with extensive experience in universities in Chile. She introduced R2L to Chile through a conference she organised at the University of Concepcion in 2006. From 2009 she has been working to train Chilean teachers in the methodology, and has been translating the R2L course materials into Spanish.

Suanne Tikoft, Literacy Coordinator, Yirara College, Alice SpringsSuAnne

Suanne has worked as a language and litreracy eductor with Indigenous children for many years. In 2005 she initiated an R2L program at Yirara College, Alice Springs, a boarding school for Indigenous secondary students from remote communities in the Northern Territory. As she trains successive groups of teachers the program has gone from strength to strength.

 

 

 

Many of the educators who support the program attended the Reading to Learn forum in Sydney in 2008.
